A facebook post in 2016 about how little free pantries were following the little free library model, our founder, Maria Ceraulo, began planning and gathered a committee to organize one as a ministry of UU Amherst. Partnering with Congregation Havurah, she was awarded a Riefler Grant from the Network of Religious Communities to cover start-up costs.

Two years later, Amherst Little Free Pantry opened on Sunday, September 30, 2018, and has been in continuous operation since. A volunteer is scheduled to re-stock at least once per day.

During the pandemic, Maria fell ill and couldn’t participate in daily operations. An administrative team was assembled, and with the help of UB Student Law Clinics, ALFP incorporated and obtained non-profit 501(c)(3) status as our own entity.
Meanwhile, members of UU Amherst created a clothing ministry, Out of the Closet. Seasonal items are available on the rack and in the cabinet next to our food and personal care offerings.

UU Amherst’s community garden, located next to the portico, is a source of fresh produce during the growing season. Generous donors also bring fruits and vegetables from home or farmers’ markets.
